Two teenagers playing a console game in front of a CRT, warm lamplight — Mood: from Adrian's short film “Josh & Jacob” **

Three friends. One obsession. One last tournament.

Drei Freunde. Eine Obsession. Ein letztes Turnier.

A small-town kid, his two best friends and a shared obsession: CRT glow, LAN weekends, the games that raised them.

When he gets the chance to play for one of Europe's top clans, just as LAN tournaments turn into real leagues, he takes it and leaves everything behind.

Months later he comes home, one friend lost, with one last tournament standing between him and the little PC shop where it all started.

Ein Junge aus der Kleinstadt, seine zwei besten Freunde und eine gemeinsame Obsession: das Leuchten der Röhrenmonitore, durchgezockte LAN-Wochenenden, die Spiele, mit denen sie groß geworden sind.

Dann kommt das Angebot, für einen der besten Clans Europas zu spielen, genau in der Zeit, in der aus LAN-Turnieren echte Ligen werden. Er sagt zu und lässt alles hinter sich.

Monate später kommt er zurück. Einen Freund hat er unterwegs verloren. Und zwischen ihm und dem kleinen PC-Laden, in dem alles angefangen hat, steht nur noch ein letztes Turnier.

FILE 01 / 03CONTINUE?

INT. MATZE'S HOUSE - MATZE'S BEDROOM - EVENING

MATZE (11), Simon and Alex are in Matze's bedroom. Matze is playing and they're all in front of the TV. They all try to play it cool, like the game's scariness is not affecting them.

MATZE

Check this out!

He shoots a zombie. Red blood appears.

ALEX

I don't see why that's so harmful?! Censoring's just stupid!

SIMON

Yeah like... what's supposed to happen when I see this? My blood is also red. Grey blood is just so stupid. The game's not even scary then.

MATZE

(referring to the game)

Where do we have to go?

SIMON

Did you check this door already?

ALEX

Remember, we just have 4 bullets left.

The boys are all silently following what's happening on screen. We hear a lockpick being used and a door opening. Then footsteps from in game. Then suddenly, we hear glass shatter and dogs barking - they all jolt and scream. Matze, who was holding the controller, presses pause super quick!

MATZE

NOPE! NOPE! NOPE!

He hands the controller to Alex.

ALEX

Absolutely not!

He hands the controller to Simon.

SIMON

Why me? Oh god... ok. Here goes nothing!

He unpauses, and, while continuously clenching his teeth, manages to escape the room. They all let out a sigh of relief.

SIMON (CONT'D)

Holy! Yo feel my heart beating. It never beat so fast!

MATZE

(touching his chest)

Yooo dude! Let's not get a heart attack here!

They all laugh and relax a little bit.

SIMON

Imagine how cool it would be to do gaming as your job? Like, playing games and getting money for it! That must be the best job ever!

ALEX

I mean, if we just continue playing, we will be good anyways right?

MATZE

We just never stop playing!

SIMON

(smiling)

Never stop playing!

Simon presses a button on the controller. We hear the Moonlight Sonata being played in the game. It's an eerie but nonetheless beautiful atmosphere. We push in on the three boys huddled together in front of the TV, completely mesmerized. Listening to Beethoven for the first time in their lives, inside a video game.

FILE 02 / 03CONTINUE?

INT. SIMON'S HOME - SIMON'S DAD'S OFFICE - NIGHT

Simon sneaks into his father's office using the key on top of the doorframe. He boots up the PC and researches esports team pages.

He stumbles upon a world of his dreams. Big tournaments with hundreds or even thousands of people, prize money pools with tens of thousands of dollars. Next to it, open team applications. One picture shows a player with what seems to be his parents on stage. All smiling happily. Simon's health bar grows.

Suddenly, the light in the room turns on. Simon's dad enters and takes a look at the printed out application in the printer.

INSERT: The video call system POPS UP.

SIMON/FOX

(stressed)

Shit! I've been caught! They know about the plan!

COLONEL

No point in denying, Fox! The only option you have is to deescalate! Impress with the numbers!

MEDIC

Your internal signals indicate high stress. Your actions are highly impulsive!

Call ends. Simon looks at his dad.

SIMON'S DAD

Care to explain what you are doing in here?

SIMON

Just... some research.

SIMON'S DAD

You know you are not supposed to be in here.

SIMON

Well if you wouldn't have taken away the internet in my room, I wouldn't need to be in here.

SIMON'S DAD

(nodding towards the print outs)

And what's this?

SIMON

A team is looking for new players. I want to apply! And get this: They just received a deal by Intel! They climbed the leaderboard by 3000 elo points this year already, all their team members are elite silver eagle!

Simon might as well speak Chinese.

SIMON'S DAD

I'm not gonna finance some video game fantasy.

SIMON

Fine, make it a loan then. They pay a salary. It's a proper job if I get it. I can pay you back!

SIMON'S DAD

(scoffs)

If you get it... And what then? What if you don't win? You get a consolation prize? In your age, I was already repairing my own cars and selling them. You want to earn money playing computer games? Time to grow up!

SIMON

(upset)

I DON'T WANT TO REPAIR CARS! Why is that so hard for you to understand?!

SIMON (CONT'D)

(stuttering)

Look - I know we don't have the best relationship...

His dad looks at him, shocked.

SIMON'S DAD

(angry, turning to walk away)

We have a GREAT relationship!

He leaves Simon standing alone. Simon's health bar shrinks.
